15 Reasons Why I'm Awesome

Double-posting today because I decided I wanted to jump in on this writing prompt at Mama Kat's too. Because I'm awesome. Here's why that is:

15 Reasons Why I'm Awesome...

  1. I can spell everything. E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. That plus every other English word you know.
  2. I got hit by a car at 33mph when I was 8 and lived to tell about it. Not even a broken bone.
  3. I have two awesome little boys. Awesome spawn come from awesome people. Therefore, by default, I am awesome. Double awesome.
  4. I'm left-handed. Like #3, I default to awesome for that.
  5. I'm artistic and creative. I love to paint...and some think I just might be pretty good at it.
  6. I make fitness a priority...not just a random hobby.
  7. I do whatever it takes to provide for my family...often being ambitious enough to have more than one job.
  8. I know how to laugh at myself and often do.
  9. I bend over backward for those I love...and don't mind doing it.
  10. I forgive people almost as easily as God does...OK, maybe not that easy, but I've buried many a hatchet in my day because I think it's the best thing to .
  11. I can open a jar easier than my husband can.
  12. I danced the majority of my life and can still do the splits.
  13. I know when to be a blunt bitch, a passive bitch and when to bite my tongue. It's an art.
  14. I can find common ground with almost anyone and usually have no problem striking up conversations with complete strangers. {I consider them friendship opportunities.}
  15. I'm about as sarcastic as they come...but try to use it for good {laughter}, not evil.
Mama's Losin' It

Well, that was fun. I think it's good for everyone to celebrate their awesomeness every once in a while. No need to always deny compliments, talents and successes, right? We are all awesome in one way or another. xoxo

Memorial Day Weekend Recap & Skincare in Your 30s

Wow...coming off a long weekend and heading back to work can prove difficult. For starters, my hair looks like this today:

And I'm not sorry.

It was a great weekend. Jake's brother, his wife and kids came to town and all of the boys went fishing with Papa up at Lake Moultrie both Saturday and Sunday. This made for a lot of free time for Momma. I spent it at the pool mostly. So while my boys were out looking like this:

My view was pretty much this:

I got to do a lot of reading on my Kindle - really enjoying The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. And I've got a hint of a tan now...been wanting to get a little base started before we head to Florida in less than two weeks. I'm using SPF though...don't worry...so it will probably be a while before I have any good color. I just really don't want to burn myself in order to get color anymore - the risks are so not worth it. This is what I'm using - SPF 12 was the highest I could find in a tanning dry oil {please let me know if you know of another that is higher!} So I just reapply often.

I took the boys to the pool late Sunday afternoon after they got back from fishing and then again on Memorial Day. We avoided the beach as the tourist traffic is just insane and getting to the beach could take over an hour...not to mention also when you were ready to head home from the beach. Just not worth it - we can go anytime.

I went to Target on Saturday to get some skincare products to add to my regimen. Megan of Style Me Swanky had some great products to suggest and I definitely wanted to try a few. She said she has combination skin, so I thought what worked for her might also work for me. I really want the Clinique items she is using because I have always loved Clinique, but I only had time to get to Target, so I may just order them online from Sephora.

Here's what I did purchase:

L'Oreal® Ideal Clean Foaming Gel Cleanser for All Skin Types - 6.8 oz
{source}
This foaming gel cleanser by L'Oreal looked promising. I had not heard of it before, but when I read the back and it seemed pretty gentle and was what I needed to get my makeup off at the end of the day, I decided to give it a go. So far so good. It doesn't irritate my skin and it gets all of my makeup off without a problem.

Neutrogena Naturals Facial Wash - 6 fl. oz.
{source}
Megan had recommended this facial cleanser by Neutrogena. I'm reading The Honest Life by Jessica Alba, so I've been a little more careful about choosing products with the least chemicals in them, so this definitely fit that description. I use it after I remove my makeup with the L'Oreal cleanser. To apply it, I wet my face, neck and decolletage with warm water and then use this:

AcneFree® Advanced Cleansing Brush
{source}
Megan uses the Clarisonic, but I didn't have the means to spend that much on a face care item at the moment, so I opted for this one I found by Acne Free. It was only $14.99 and came with 2 removable brush heads. So far, I really like it and my face feels really clean after using it. My pores are looking a lot cleaner. All it takes is a pea-sized amount of the cleanser applied on the brush head and it thoroughly cleanses all of those areas.

After that step, I pat dry and then using a cotton ball, I apply a light layer of pure grapeseed oil. This was a tip I read about weeks ago and I really like the results so far. My face seems clearer and brighter...and the fine lines are less harsh.

Now that I'm 30, I know it's a good idea to start using a retinol product. Megan suggested this one by Neutrogena, so I picked it up:

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer (Night) - 1 oz
{source}
A little dab goes a long way. I've been using it every night so far, but it does say if it starts to irritate, to go to once every other day. So I'll let you know if I have to do that.

Then lastly, the night cream I've been using for a couple weeks now is L'Oreal's Revitalift. I have no complaints so far.

L'Oreal Advanced Revitalift Night - 1.7 oz.
{source}

So that's my new nightly skincare routine. I'll let you know how I like it in a few weeks after I have a chance to hopefully see some positive results. I will say though, in just the couple of days I've been doing this regimen, my skin looks a lot smoother, brighter and clearer. My pores are definitely cleaned out! I'm hoping to see some improvement in the "crow's feet" and expression lines I've started noticing the last couple of years.

Memorial Day Weekend

While I of course want you all to have a very happy and fun-filled Memorial Day weekend, I wanted to pay tribute to what this "holiday" truly stands for. Please honor and think of all those that have lost their lives fighting for our rights and freedoms...those that have survived...and those that are still fighting. And don't forget their loved ones who go through so much so our soldiers can do what duty calls them to do.

I have a little something to spill...I think I'm going to start a fitness blog...again. I know, I know...I really just need to make up my mind already. But I've got a new angle and I'm working on getting some things ready before the official launch. Bottom line is that fitness is really important to me, and for whatever reason, when I'm blogging about something, I tend to be even more about it than I already am {like seriously, I never shopped so much in my life before Style Oyster}. And right now what I need is to get fitness-focused. So I guess I'm just going to go for it. I'll be sure to let you know when it launches...and I hope you'll become a follower there too. xoxo

The Half-Tuck

Zoe Saldana
{source}

I'll be honest. This is a look I just don't get. The half-tucked in shirt. If Zoe wasn't as gorgeous as she is and had the killer body she does...well, this would just look plain half-ass. {And it kind of still does.} She would've been better off just going all the way with it.

What do you think of this half-tucked trend? Do you like it? Hate it? Love it? Tried it?

To me, it sort of screams "walk of shame"...anyone else see it? Like you made a mad dash out of that one-night stand's apartment.

I say, if you're going to tuck it in - just go all the way. It just looks more polished, professional and pretty to me.

Maybe it's the "mom" in me.

Disclaimer: If you rock the "half-tuck" and love it...by all means, go with it. This is my personal opinion and not an attack on half-tuckers. xoxo

Monday Musings

You may want to stop reading this post right now if you have a fear of boredom. Because I can't say that the weekend I had would excite anyone. Although, it was a great weekend. Why?

I didn't drive my car once.

I was able to sleep in until almost 8am each morning {thanks to my 7yo knowing how to turn on the Wii by himself and the 2yo being a sleepyhead}.

I napped {both days}.

I got my laundry 100% caught up and done.

I took the boys to the pool and got some relaxation reading done in the sun.

I went makeup-less on Saturday {until we went to the neighbors' house for a BBQ}.

I made homemade healthy popsicles with the boys using our Zoku.

I enjoyed a glass of wine and my Kindle on the porch while the boys ran around the backyard eating popsicles and playing.

There you have it...the concoction for one great weekend {at least for a working mommy}.

Bonus points: Weighed myself and found I've lost 4 lbs since February. Yay for clean eating and working out religiously!

Tanner's got just 3 weeks of school left and then we are headed to Kissimmee, FL the day after his last day to spend a week going to Disney World theme parks, Busch Gardens & possibly Sea World. It will be our first real family vacation together - just the four of us. I'm so excited for a lot of fun in the sun. I'm thinking I'm due for a new bikini or two before the trip...

Camo Chic

Inspired by the military trend...I think it's timeless, more than a trend, actually.

Here's my take on it - using what I already had in my closet:

Pants - Victoria's Secret catalogue {years ago}
Top - TJ Maxx {years ago}
Shoes - Mia brand {do not remember where I got them, have had them a long time}
Necklace - Target in-store {I got this a couple of months ago, so there's a chance that yours might still carry it or I found it online here.} Target's site calls it a coral bib necklace, but it reminds me of deer antlers...sort of goes perfectly with the camo theme.
