Five on Friday

 Happy Friday and Happy {early} Valentine's Day! Also, happy Friday the 13th {try to make it happy, not unlucky}!

 

It's been a busy week over here...I put in a few hours of overtime this week, so I didn't spend much time here on the blog. Farrah has been feeling a lot better and it's great to have her back to her happy self. But anyway, on to my five for this lovely Friday.

Jake and I won't really be celebrating Valentine's Day this year. His USCG Reserves weekend falls on the second full weekend of every month, so he will actually be in Georgetown, SC all weekend. It's OK though, I've never been one to make a big deal about this holiday. We will try and get a date night in next weekend. And if this e-card didn't just hit the nail on the head:

I feel like once I'm beginning to see the cusp of springtime and Daylight Savings, I tend to start to make my running list of things I'd like to accomplish around the house. One project I've put on the back burner for a couple of years now is redecorating our master bedroom. We have had it blue and brown since we moved into this house almost 7 years ago.

I am ready for a change. I'm starting to try and have our house sort of flow more with its colors...our living room went to pink/yellow/gray, our office/home gym is black/white/gray with pops of teal and pink and our kitchen is now black/white/gray with a couple small pops of pink. Upstairs where we all sleep, Farrah's room is pink/orange/gray and Tanner and Breckin's shared room is blue/orange/brown mostly {I don't intend on having theirs flow with the house considering the common denominator of the other rooms is pink, so they will be the exception, being boys and all}. For our room, I've wanted to paint the walls gray {surprise} and do a lot of white/gray/pink in the decor. This is my inspiration, but I won't go as heavy on the pink for Jake's sake:

I bought this rug from the awesome 75% off Valentine's Day sale at Rugs USA {use promo code: HEART75}, so I'm going to build my design around that. I also want to go all white with our bedding like above. {P.S. Those of you that loved Farrah's nursery rug, it's back in stock and on sale!}

I'll be sure to update you as progress goes along. We do have a dark brown bed and dressers, but hopefully it will still all work nicely.

Farrah turned 9 months on Monday...I can't believe my last baby is 3/4 of the way through her first year. It does make me sad knowing I'll never have a baby again...I'm just trying to cherish these moments with her as best as I can. I've already gotten started on her birthday party planning...I am so happy I will be throwing a rainbow-themed party in my lifetime! Of course, I turned to Pinterest for inspiration, as well as have a few creative ideas of my own!

I'm starting early with planning because I know how fast 3 months flies by in this house, especially when I'm working full-time. I don't want to procrastinate on the details or I'll never get around to doing most of them.

Tomorrow's weather is looking to be pretty sunny, but only a high of 56...I'm debating taking the kiddos out to the beach {with layers, of course} to play a little bit. I can't wait until every weekend is a beach weekend.

{five}

It's official...my life has gotten so boring that I can't think of a 5th thing...either that or my brain is officially fried from this week. Maybe it's a bit of both. Have a happy weekend!

Painted Dressers

In mentally preparing to take on the nursery-to-toddler room project, I took a long hard look (maybe a few of them) at Breckin's room and decided what I would be keeping and what I would be moving out. I have two of these dressers that I got for free 6 or 7 years ago from one of my husband's friends looking to free up some of his storage space:

Being 22, pregnant with my first child and pinching every penny, I jumped on the offer. I had known I was going to do my baby's room in a beach-y surfer theme and I thought the bamboo-esque details of the dressers would fit the theme just right. But alas, my style has grown and matured, and I'm ready to be rid of them. Tanner's was actually moved to our storage unit when we gave him our bedroom set, but Breckin still has the other in his room.

Being a handy-dandy DIY-er, I almost consider it a sin to throw out usable furniture that is in generally good condition just because I don't like the look of it. I CAN CHANGE THE LOOK OF IT!

We have a blank space in our kitchen next to the fridge that I've always thought would be perfect for a buffet-type piece of furniture, or even a bar - having an extra surface and extra storage would be so nice for our little kitchen/dining area. *A-ha moment*: repaint the dresser and use it as a buffet! Seriously, I was pissed at myself for not having thought of it sooner. So that is the next project on my to-do list (and I have 2! So I will likely repaint the other one to fit better with my vision for Breckin's room!)

Almost Time For A Big Boy Room

Let me preface this post by telling you that Breckin is now 23 months old. And if my memory serves me correctly (and it does), we had Tanner out of his crib and into a twin-size bed the same month he turned 2. That doesn't leave me a lot of time to plan Breckin's new toddler/big boy room. Luckily, we already have Tanner's old twin platform bed {lucky boy got upgraded to our queen bedroom set when we figured out a way to fit our nicer bedroom set - which was in the downstairs guest room - into our master bedroom} being kept in storage for Breckin.

So anyway, since Tanner went from twin to queen, I of course had to get him new bedding. I chose a plain navy bedspread from Target that can grow with him and is easily interchangeable should we ever change up the decor. And Breckin will get Tanner's color block quilt I purchased from Target not too long ago that I absolutely LOVE. It's main colors are light and navy blues, brown, green and orange. So I will be moving some of Tanner's decor that matches that set into Breckin's room once the time arrives. And Tanner will get some new decor of course. We'll have to paint Breckin's (currently lime green) walls to go better with the new color scheme. My mind is just brewing with ideas!

Anyway, long story short, I'm feeling very inspired by Pinterest pins that have cute boy's room ideas! Here are some of my favorite boy's room pins (oh, and we also will be keeping our surfer theme going, so you'll see a lot of that here):

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Pinterest rocks my world. That's all.

If I need an idea, or am trying to figure out the best way to do something - be it fashion, interior design, decorating or whatever, well, I just head over to Pinterest and I usually am able to find exactly what I'm looking for...or maybe even what I never knew I totally loved. Pinterest is amaze-balls like that.

So anyway, to get on with the actual topic of this post: Art

We love it, we admire it, we gaze at it, we need it to decorate with...but not everyone can make it (or so they think).

Thanks to Pinterest, we have access to so many great DIY art ideas - stuff that is pretty easy, but looks fabulous. {No one would ever know you don't have a creative bone in your body.}

I have been an artist since I could pick up a paintbrush, but I know not everyone is the same...and even I get a little artist's block from time to time - so things like this help inspire and motivate me. Here are some of the best DIY artworks on Pinterest:

Talk about a perfect rainy-day art project for adults and kids alike. This would be a fun addition to a home office, craft or play room.

Believe it or not, this piece was made by strategically- placing tape to create a herringbone design and then splashing some paint over it in a whimsical fashion. Remove the tape when paint is dry and - VOILA! Art.

I'm a fan of Jen Ramos' artwork. These pieces in particular would be pretty easy to recreate for yourself. You could choose any colors you wish so that it goes perfectly with your decor. I love how they add a great pop of color - so simple, yet so fabulous.

I love the monochromatic scheme of these pieces, but you could even recreate your own unique version using complementary or a multitude of colors. Geometrics are all the rage right now, so why not take advantage of the simplicity in their creation?

Simply take a can of spray paint and some large leaves and have at it! I love how they did many of these in different colors and leaves and made a gallery. What a nice statement. And who doesn't love a little nature?
