4th of July & Myrtle Beach Weekend {Teaser}

We had a great 4th of July and this weekend we also managed to sneak away for a quick mini-vacay in Myrtle Beach...I haven't yet had the chance to upload and edit all of the photos from my camera, but I took a few shots on Instagram with my iPhone and thought I'd share them here. I will post the rest of the photos later this week. Enjoy...xoxo

Trash to Treasure: Jewelry Display

A couple months ago, I found a skinny little basic black-framed bulletin board at Goodwill for a couple bucks. It also had a place at the top of it for a 4x6 photo. Not immediately knowing what I was going to use it for, I went ahead and bought it (I apologize for the lack of "before" photo, I could swear I took one and can't find it!)

It then sat in my garage amongst my other Goodwill finds that I have yet to "treasure".

I've been inspired by a lot of the bulletin-boards-turned-jewelry-organizers I've seen on the www lately. I decided that would be the perfect transformation for this little bulletin board find of mine.

First, I had to figure out what I wanted to put in that little 4x6 photo frame. After some thought, I decided a cute quote that would be inspiring in the morning would be the way to go, since I planned on hanging this jewelry organizer in the vanity area I have started making in my closet (more to come on that, by the way!) I will be starting my day there every day - picking out an outfit, putting on makeup and of course, accessorizing with some bling.

I went with this quote by Audrey Hepburn - and got on my computer to make a cute chevron background:

Don't you agree that is the most perfect quote to start your day with (and so fitting for a dressing area)?!

I then put it in the bulletin board frame:

Super-cute, right? Eventually I want to paint the bulletin part of the board, but for now, this definitely works for me.

Here it is, hung up with my necklaces dangling:

I've decided I need to add to my necklace collection...many of my old faves have broken and I haven't purchased any new in a while.

So what do you think of the jewelry board? Now that they are on display, they won't be "outta sight, outta mind"...so hopefully you'll be seeing me with more accessories from now on!

Almost Time For A Big Boy Room

Let me preface this post by telling you that Breckin is now 23 months old. And if my memory serves me correctly (and it does), we had Tanner out of his crib and into a twin-size bed the same month he turned 2. That doesn't leave me a lot of time to plan Breckin's new toddler/big boy room. Luckily, we already have Tanner's old twin platform bed {lucky boy got upgraded to our queen bedroom set when we figured out a way to fit our nicer bedroom set - which was in the downstairs guest room - into our master bedroom} being kept in storage for Breckin.

So anyway, since Tanner went from twin to queen, I of course had to get him new bedding. I chose a plain navy bedspread from Target that can grow with him and is easily interchangeable should we ever change up the decor. And Breckin will get Tanner's color block quilt I purchased from Target not too long ago that I absolutely LOVE. It's main colors are light and navy blues, brown, green and orange. So I will be moving some of Tanner's decor that matches that set into Breckin's room once the time arrives. And Tanner will get some new decor of course. We'll have to paint Breckin's (currently lime green) walls to go better with the new color scheme. My mind is just brewing with ideas!

Anyway, long story short, I'm feeling very inspired by Pinterest pins that have cute boy's room ideas! Here are some of my favorite boy's room pins (oh, and we also will be keeping our surfer theme going, so you'll see a lot of that here):

Hubbies & Blogs

I have a question for those of you that are reading (all one or two of you)...

Does your husband/significant other follow/read your blog?

My husband does not read my blog (except for the occasional times I shove the laptop in his face for a must-read - which he totally appreciates btw.) I kind of wish he would...the girl in me wants him to have a genuine interest in all things I do...but his way of showing "interest" is by teasing me about my "hobby". (He thinks it's nice I have a hobby.) Every time I do something new around the house, he jokingly says something like, "Are you going to blog about it?" And then laughs. Haha.

Part of me wishes he would hold even want to be involved in it and help me think of new things - be a team, like the dynamic duo John & Sherry are. But my husband is not like that in the least. He's a bonafied guy's guy and even though he loves carpentry and is a great DIY-er naturally (check out this desk he made me, inspired by iHeart Organizing):

...he still thinks the whole blog thing is a girly thing and wants nada to do with it. The good thing though is that if I ever need help with a household project, he is always willing to help (sometimes reluctantly, but in his defense, he probably thinks I come up with too many ideas at once and the thought of tackling them all mentally exhausts him.)

So even though I wish he would bump my amount of readers from two up to three, I guess it could be worse. He supports me in the only way he knows how...I guess I can't fault the guy for being the typical man that does not care for fashion or interior design and decor. (I'm sure I'm not the only girl married to one of those.)

So how about you - does your significant other read what you have to write?

If not, at least we have each other.

Chic in Chevron

One of the reasons I love summer is that I get to pull out my cute dresses and maxi's that hid in a dark corner in my closet for too many months. I'm loving the chevron craze right now too and think these cute picks are perfect for summer (and won't hurt the wallet!)

Color Pairing & Harmony

I recently received the following email from one of my fabulous readers:

"Hello,

First let me say I love your blog. So many great ideas...

One area I am horrible with is putting colors together. I get so afraid to mix it up I end up doing nothing. Do you have any websites or suggestions for this issue?

Thanks bunches

Teresa"

While I did send Teresa a personal message in response to her question, I thought this would be a perfect topic for discussion here on the blog. I think that color pairing and creating harmony among various colors, deciding which colors to use and throwing it all together to create an inviting space that is pleasing to the eye can absolutely pose a challenge to even the most creative and experienced of interior designers. So naturally, it tends to be a difficulty for us amateur-status home decorators.

Many people that believe they have never had an eye for design or color, or even the least bit of a creative bone in their body, will stare at a blank slate and find themselves completely overwhelmed with all the options out there and how to properly stage the furniture in the space and make it functional to their needs. And COLOR...well, that's probably the most important and challenging aspect of them all.

So where does one start?

Well, there's a few different ways you can look at this. For me, I know that there will always be changing and evolving trends out there, and if you try to keep caught up with it all the time, you may find yourself exhausted. Or you may end up with a space that doesn't really fit the real you. I believe a space should make you feel happy when you see it, and ultimately be a reflection of your personality. So the obvious place to start should be to ask yourself, "What colors do I like?" It shouldn't matter what the color combo of the season is. You are the one that has to live with it, so make sure you love it. If you have trouble nailing down the colors you truly love, I always suggest going in and taking a look at your wardrobe. You're sure to find it there. You may also get a good idea on specific patterns that you like.

Next ask yourself, "What color pairings naturally catch my eye and arouse interest?" You may want to search for inspiration in magazines, on Pinterest or other websites to answer this question. Try to be aware of what color combinations are particularly calling out to you while perusing. And if all else fails, as an artist, I have to suggest the tried and true color wheel:

There are some very simple rules with the color wheel:

1. Opposites attract. Colors directly across from one another, or rather, complementary colors, make great pairings...however, it is a bold combo to use the same level of tone in each color. But if bold is your thing, go for it! If not, I suggest taking the opposite colors and maybe taking one or both of them and moving a couple shades paler or darker...it will still have that opposites-attract harmonious effect, but a little less abrupt, i.e. pink and lime vs. red and green.

via
via

2. Colors next to each other, also known as analogous colors, also mix well. I try not to pick a range of more than 2-6 in a row. It also gives you the option of having a main color and using shades in the darker and lighter directions to mix it up a bit and add visual interest.

via
via
You may even think that you want a very neutral-toned space with pops of color here and there. This creates a nice effect as well. I do suggest this for novices that are unsure of their ability to add color to a space...you can get your feet wet with your accents and gradually evolve over time by taking more risks with color, possibly through accent furniture, art or knick-knacks. Neutrals to choose from are whites, grays, browns and even black. Some people choose to use these colors in their furniture (which I personally like to do as well, in case I ever want to change up my color scheme, I don't have to purchase a lot of new expensive furniture pieces.) Some will use them on the walls - if you're unsure of whether or not to add a bright accent color to a wall, neutrals are a safe way to go - you can always add the color in with a piece of wall art.
via
via
Another option is using the main bright color(s) all over and having a lot of neutral accent pieces to off-set it. This might be the most difficult of the color scheme plans, as it takes a bit of talent to not over-do a room with this method. I'm still learning this method myself! You want to show off your color, but still be able to be comfortable, relaxed and happy in the room. Harmonious.

via

So you can see there are a lot of different directions to choose...even more than I named here. But this is a good place to start. My biggest advice is to "do you". It's not worth all the HGTV-worthiness if you are not in love with the space at the end of the day. Make sure it is functional for your lifestyle and shows off your personality...because I'm sure you have an awesome one! And do remember, that SOMETHING is better than NOTHING.

Thank you, Teresa, for your email...and thank you to all my readers! If you have any suggestions on this topic, please leave a comment below!

DIY Art via Pinterest

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Pinterest rocks my world. That's all.

If I need an idea, or am trying to figure out the best way to do something - be it fashion, interior design, decorating or whatever, well, I just head over to Pinterest and I usually am able to find exactly what I'm looking for...or maybe even what I never knew I totally loved. Pinterest is amaze-balls like that.

So anyway, to get on with the actual topic of this post: Art

We love it, we admire it, we gaze at it, we need it to decorate with...but not everyone can make it (or so they think).

Thanks to Pinterest, we have access to so many great DIY art ideas - stuff that is pretty easy, but looks fabulous. {No one would ever know you don't have a creative bone in your body.}

I have been an artist since I could pick up a paintbrush, but I know not everyone is the same...and even I get a little artist's block from time to time - so things like this help inspire and motivate me. Here are some of the best DIY artworks on Pinterest:

Talk about a perfect rainy-day art project for adults and kids alike. This would be a fun addition to a home office, craft or play room.

Believe it or not, this piece was made by strategically- placing tape to create a herringbone design and then splashing some paint over it in a whimsical fashion. Remove the tape when paint is dry and - VOILA! Art.

I'm a fan of Jen Ramos' artwork. These pieces in particular would be pretty easy to recreate for yourself. You could choose any colors you wish so that it goes perfectly with your decor. I love how they add a great pop of color - so simple, yet so fabulous.

I love the monochromatic scheme of these pieces, but you could even recreate your own unique version using complementary or a multitude of colors. Geometrics are all the rage right now, so why not take advantage of the simplicity in their creation?

Simply take a can of spray paint and some large leaves and have at it! I love how they did many of these in different colors and leaves and made a gallery. What a nice statement. And who doesn't love a little nature?

Hopefully you feel inspired to create your own work of art for your space! Don't forget to follow my Pinterest boards!
