When They Stop Talking To You

I couldn't think of anything "stylish" to post here today because of the morning I had with my oldest son.

To preface this post, I should tell you that Tanner is an extremely intelligent, witty and awesome little boy. However, he is defiant, stubborn and strong-willed {still wondering where he got it from, tee hee}. That being said, he has proved our most difficult child - though in his defense, we only have two and he's got almost 5 years extra time on Breckin. He is extremely excitable and loud {boys, right?} Mornings are especially difficult because he usually grumbles about having to get up, get dressed and go to school...then by the time he gets to the breakfast table, he's going 100 miles per hour just talking loudly and being extremely off-task from what he needs to do {which is eat}. He picks on Breckin each and every morning from across the table as if it's just part of his daily routine...he's a very routine person.

This morning he seemed especially difficult, but more so because his behavior was very negative. He was saying mean things to both his brother and me and I had to continuously intervene to correct the behavior. He would make mad faces and pout. The mother in me told me that something was really bothering him and that he was acting out. I asked him to come to me and I gave him a hug and told him I loved him and that I wanted to know what was wrong so we could try to fix it. He said "Nothing." {Oh, the teenager years have arrived very early.} I tried to coax any sort of reasoning for his negative behavior out of him to no avail.

Summer 2009

 Off we went to school and the car ride was similar to every other morning - picking at Breckin to make him scream {which is just lovely while driving, I tell you}. However, again, it was very negative. After trying to remedy the situation of picking on each other, he would just stare at the window and then I'd catch him in my mirror with a discontent look on his face. I again told him I loved him and asked him to please tell me what is the matter. He said, "I just don't want you talking to me."

**Heartbreak**

I left it alone for right then and when I got to Breckin's daycare, I told Breckin to say goodbye to Tanner like I always do and he gave him a cheerfully sweet "Byeee, Tanner!" with a wave. Tanner just stared the other direction out the window with his angry look. I said, "Tanner, your brother said 'bye' to you, please say it back." So then he grumbled, "Bye." I decided not to make it worse, so I told Tanner I'd be right back and I took Breckin in. I made sure to tell Breckin that Tanner does love him, he's just not in a good mood right now.

Autumn 2012

 When I got back in the car, I again tried to ask Tanner if he was OK. He said he was fine. I was beginning to feel like a nag. We had a very silent ride to his school. When we got there, I opened his door and gave him a big hug goodbye and told him I loved him and wished him an awesome day.

Summer 2012

 My heart is hurting...I know he can be a moodswing-y child, but he just seemed so angry. And when he won't even talk to me about what he's feeling, it hurts worse. He's such a sweet, kindhearted child and it breaks my heart to see him this way. I hope he has a great day at school and that he'll be ready to talk with me this afternoon. Sometimes I worry whether he knows how loved he is...or if he's jealous of his little brother...or if there are kids at school that make him feel bad. But I guess I will drive myself crazy with all the things out there that could possibly hurt his feelings...however, it's hard not to do that when you're a mother.

Tanner & Me - 2006

 Anyone have any advice for this type of thing - it's a little too early for him to be going all "teenager" on me. Not ready for that!

Monday Musings

How was y'all's weekend?

I had a sweet Mother's Day...♥

I was given the gift of sleeping in while Jake got the boys ready and they planned a cute little breakfast-in-bed menu for me. When I awoke, two very handsome little maĆ®tre d's greeted me at my bedside with the handwritten menu and a "Happy Mother's Day!" These boys just make my heart melt.

Before we headed to church, I was given a coupon to have them wash my car. We opted to go to the 11am service, so they had time to get it done before we left. I don't know what got more wet - my car or the boys. They definitely had to be changed out of the soaking wet clothing before church!

I of course called my own mommy before we headed to church and the day got away from me.

After church, we had a nice lunch at a local Mexican restaurant, Rio Grande. I enjoyed a margarita of course. When we went home, I got a chance to take a little catnap while Jake and the boys did some yard work.

We then headed to the pool and then Jake made us some tilapia and veggies for dinner.

It may not sound like an amazing day, but it was so sweet and just what I needed - stress-free and full of love for mommy. I sure am going to miss Mother's Days like this when I'm an empty-nester in 16 years or so.

After all that, I went to the grocery store while Jake did the boys' nighttime routine. I know it sounds like a chore on Mother's Day, but it's kind of relaxing when it's sans kids.

I started reading some of the books on my reading wishlist...did what I said I would do and downloaded them on my Kindle. So far I've bought The Honest Life, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home. I've started on the first two and will definitely let you know what I think of them when I'm done.

In other news, I really want to brighten up our outdoor space. I'll definitely need new seating to go the direction I want to go. I love Cassie's use of color in hers for the Home Depot Challenge and in spirit of the change in color I have already done with my living room and kitchen, I thought, why not flow it on out the back door while I'm at it?

{source}

I've been looking around for similar rugs - in either color or pattern, but I can't seem to find any that were as good of a deal as the two she got at IKEA and sewed together. I'm in love with that pink and orange and at $9.99 per piece of rug, it's a steal. Sturdy and made for outdoors. I've just got to make the trip to Charlotte soon to snag them up.

Then the hunt for either some neutral cushions for my current patio set, or a new patio set altogether. Maybe there's a way I could recover mine? My current set's cushions are brown and blue and I'm kinda over that combo. Plus it's a tad sun-faded now anyway, so it's kind of like I have to replace them. Right? Hubby might disagree, but oh well.

Well, that's all I have for this Monday...hope y'all have an awesome week! xoxo

Time To Dust Off The Kindle

I don't know about you, but as a working mom, usually picking up a book to read is the last thing I think I have time to do. As a child, though academically intelligent, I wasn't one of those that loved to hole myself up in my room for hours and read novels. I rarely did. I was more active and extroverted. Don't get me wrong, there have been books that piqued my interest so much that I zoomed through them in a matter of a few days, but other than that, not much of a reader.

But I'd really like to make an effort to read more. Maybe I could replace my fitness magazines and read a book when on the treadmill or elliptical...maybe I could try to go to bed a half hour or so earlier and try to get in some light reading. I know there are ways I could make time for it, and from what I hear, it can actually be a nice, relaxing experience if I allow my mind to turn off everything else.

All that being said, I have been interested in a few books that are new-ish to the market and I think it's time to dust off that old Kindle - that I haven't touched since putting 50 Shades of Grey down in book 2, chapter 5 last summer. {Yeah, need to finish that series.}

Anyway - here are my picks:

1. The Honest Life by Jessica Alba

I embarked on a journey to greener living a couple of years back. I have fallen in and out, but have definitely made some changes that stuck. I started cloth diapering my then-5-month-old, Breckin, and also now make my own household cleaners using such ingredients as vinegar, pure rubbing alcohol, baking soda, lemon juice and castile soap. I'd really love to be 100% organic in our eating too, but that does prove difficult, however I try to stay away from the most processed things as possible. I can't wait to start reading this book and see the tips that Jessica has - she is so inspiring how passionate she is about it.

2 {and 3}. The Happiness Project and Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin

http://greatist.com/sites/default/files/styles/article_main/public/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Gretchen-Rubin-Books_0.jpeg?itok=HkL2kICg

I have heard so many great things about The Happiness Project - not sure why I haven't read it yet. She also just recently came out with the sequel - Happier At Home and I think that one will be great for mothers. Mother's Day present, anyone?

4. Young House Love by John & Sherry Petersik

http://blog.sndimg.com/hgtv/design/Liz/Young-House-Love-Book-Review-Blog.jpg

I, like many of you, have been reading their blog for years. They are the cutest couple and they have some of the best ideas I've ever seen for DIY-ing. I love doing DIY projects so I need to get a hold of this book for some great tips and ideas.

5. Unbearable Lightness by Portia De Rossi

http://img2-2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/101004/ew_picks/de-rossi-unbearable-lightness_211.jpg

Maybe it's due to my own past struggles with body dismorphia and eating disorders, but these types of memoirs really get to me and really interest me. I'm surprised I haven't yet picked this one up.

6. Seriously...I'm Kidding by Ellen Degeneres

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_CH1bL6i4k7C7QCS0nzBEQ7Azy4k5ciKLigvpgFtKAipU7wJxTeO7EqIfPiv05_99QvqfOZo8TMaEMv3iqr753MnvQL-7d6ZudyyZliUEetsrUS-pADJghruoVOSQTgDiKXvSaH4j0fU/s1600/Seriously_I%2527m_Kidding_Ellen_Degeneres.png

Well, may as well end the list with a funny one from the wife of the author of the serious book in slot number 5. I love Ellen - she's hilarious. I love a book that can make me laugh out loud. I also say "Seriously, I'm kidding" all the time.

CHS ----> ROC

I'm headed on my first official "business trip" today. I feel like I've got such a big girl job now. It's going to be a quick trip - leaving Charleston this morning and am scheduled to arrive back a little before midnight tonight. I am going to Rochester, NY for a meeting with some clients my boss wanted me to attend.

http://rochesterprotectives.com/diyFiles/cfiles26069.jpg
Rochester, NY
This will also be my first official trip to the state of New York! I thought that was going to happen when I go to NYC with my mom this December. But of course, NYC is a much bigger deal than Rochester, and I'll actually stay long enough to see things. Nonetheless, I am adding another "state I've been to" to my list today. Do I even have an actual list? No, just a mental record of sorts.

I'm actually excited to have some travel with this job...it won't be often, but I think it's pretty cool. {And I have been told it's likely I will get to spend a week or two in DUBAI!!!! They want me to see the factory, but seriously, Dubai? The Vegas of the Middle East? Yes, please! What a great experience!} I don't know about you, but I like, love airports. Maybe it's the prospect of getting away, or just people-watching...but I do love that part of the traveling experience {unless I'm rushing through to catch a flight!} It's also nice to just have some quiet time to myself to catch up on reading, blogging, or whatever.

Since I get back so late, I opted not to work my Friday early morning shift at the gym. Girl needs some shuteye!

Be back tomorrow hopefully with something genius here. Or not. In any case, I'll be back.

Well, This Is Random

I kinda haven't been here mentally this week...at least on the blog anyway...I've got all these half-finished posts in the waiting and when it comes another day for another post, I'm hardpressed. I think it's because ever since last week, I've had to get used to actually working in an office now and not from home. Yep, that's right...that has ended. But it's good, it means I finally get to jump into my new position full force {it has been 3 months since I've been hired after all!} So in continuing with my non-interestingness {like how I just made that shit up? Yeah I do that.} here's a post full of all things random for you.

First off, since we're talking about my days now being spent in my downtown Charleston office, here's how Monday looked this week:

Yep, she's a cutie, huh? And I get to take her to the office with me since I'm in there by myself. {Hey, gives me SOMETHING to talk to...} Only problem, she demands to nap on my lap as you can see here...and it proves difficult sometimes, especially because she keeps getting bigger {imagine that}. The office is perfect though because they just finished a cute little park right outside of it that looks over the ocean, so I have somewhere to take her for "breaks".

In other news, I have two new posts on Skinny Mom that I forgot to let you know about!

1. 6 DIY Spring Cleaning Products
2. Give your mom a workout buddy for Mother's Day

Check them out, I also recommend becoming a fan/follower of the site - lots of great info and resources. I'm so proud to be a part of it!

In following up on my fitness slump post last week, I am happy to report I've been kicking ass so far this week. On Monday, I got to the gym a little earlier than my shift started {so, like 4am} so I could knock out some cardio on the elliptical. And then I set off the fire alarm and nearly had an episode of bulimia due to nerves and an adrenalin-spike. Yesterday, I hit a Spin class after dropping the boys off at school before I had to head to work. Today, I did the cardio thing again before my gym shift early this AM and I've got an evening barre class lined up on the schedule. Sometimes I just need a kick in the ass with some self-deprecating blog post.

Well, so that's all I've got for today. I promise to be more interesting soon...those half-finished posts, well, they're doozies. {You're sooo on the edge of your seat, aren't you?}

Happy Wednesday/Hump Day!

To-Do List Tuesday

{source}
I feel over the past few months, I've tackled a lot of big projects - living room redesign, kitchen makeover, repainting the living and kitchen, bathroom under-sink organization, pantry makeover, organized kid's art area and even some small DIYs - like Tanner's and Breckin's monogram art, Tanner's bulletin board revamp, Goodwill tray revamp, etc...so while I feel pretty accomplished and proud of how much has been done...I also feel like it's time to get in perspective the things that still need done and make a list and a plan to accomplish the tasks. So that being said, here's my list of to-do's for the coming months.

  • Laundry Room
    • Paint
    • New shelving
    • Decor
    • Organization
  • Tanner's Room
    • Paint
    • New Rug
    • New Curtain
    • Wall Art
  • Breckin's Room
    • New Curtain
    • Wall Art
  • Living Room
    • Do large painting on canvas for above couch
    • New Blinds
    • Curtain for stair window
  • Kitchen
    • Organize and pretty-fy bar area or find a bar cart
    • Organize cabinets
  • Master Bedroom
    • New Bedding
    • Paint
    • New Rug
    • New Curtain
    • Wall Art
    • Accessorize
  • Upstairs Bathroom
    • Linen Closet organization
    • Wall Art
  • Garage Sale/Goodwill/Trash/Etc.
    • Go through everything and pare down! Need more simplicity in my life and less stuff.

What about you? Do you have a to-do list to stay focused and on track? I definitely am the type that needs one...it keeps me from making unnecessary purchases and such, knowing that I need to have other things done before anything else and also better-utilizing my time. Hope to share a lot of these to-do's here with you on the blog as I check them off my list! xoxo

Monday Musings {Breckin's Weekend}

I started off my Monday morning with quite the "bang". I was at the gym working the opening shift and about 10 min before 5am, when we open, I hit the fire alarm while consolidating the towel hampers and set it off. I. Was. Mortified. I had to call my manager and tell her, then of course I knew the fire dept. would show up any minute. And my 5am-regular-gym-rats were going to be heading up for their daily workout and I'd have to let them know I was an idiot. The firefighters showed up right about 5am and I had to bashfully tell them it was a false alarm. My face could have put a cherry to shame. They laughed it off and said I was to blame for them having to get up two hours early. But gosh, not the way I wanted to kick off the week! But atleast I got 20 min of elliptical time in before I started working...so I started it off alright fitness-wise. Ha!

ANYWAY....Tanner was off with his Nana and Papa having fun at Carowinds near Charlotte, NC this weekend. With Jake working most of Saturday, Breckin and I had a lot of one-on-one time, which was really nice. Those of you with more than one kiddo know how important it is to spend time with each of them separately. It's hard for Jake and me to get to do that with them, so I welcome the opportunity when it presents itself. Of course not just with Breckin, but Tanner too.

But this weekend was all about Breckin...getting to be with him...no big brother to pick on him and make him cry/whine/scream {gotta love sibling love/hate relationships}. It wasn't the nicest weekend weather-wise, so I took him to my friend, Allison's paint-your-own-pottery store and then he and I went on a mommy/son lunch date.

When Dad got home, we went out to Iacofanos for some good Italian.

On Sunday, Jake, Breckin and I went to church, then because it was Cinco de Mayo, we went to a Mexican restaurant for lunch. After that, we headed downtown to the Children's Museum.

It was a nice weekend. Tanner returned to us that evening - he had a blast at Carowinds and was so excited to tell us all about it. Then it was back to preparing for this week - laundry, bag lunches, etc.

Hope y'all had a great weekend!

I'm working in my office officially now...not from home...but I am all by myself for a few months...so I get to bring Sugar with me to keep me company. I'm lovin' this job!

Friday Five & Link Love

Hey y'all! Happy Friday! Glad to be through another week? Me too. I plan on heading to downtown Charleston this evening for the French Quarter Art Walk - beautiful art galleries serving free wine? Yes, please!

Anyway, here are my Friday Five:

1. With all the rain that we get in SC this time of year, I am finally breaking down and getting me some wellies. Yeah...I've been here 8 years...and no wellies. This girl is cray-cray. I have my eye on these snakeskin-patterned beauties by Hunter:

{source}

2. Pop-Tart Vodka to hit liquor shelves soon! This is a dream come true, y'all. A dream I didn't even know I had. And they are starting with Brown Sugar Cinnamon - my fave of all the Pop-Tarts. Oh, and the bottles will have sprinkles. Really, what other reason do you need? I can't wait to see the shot concoctions they make out of this.

3. Breckin had his first successful #1 and #2 on the potty this past Tuesday! {At least at our house.} We did a potty dance and everything.

This pic was from one of our first attempts last August - yeah, it's been a while.

4. My puppy Sugar {Boston Bulldog - currently 13 weeks old} is learning to skateboard. And doing pretty well!

5. And not that this would at all be a favorite thing of mine, but Ashlee, a girl I used to dance with way back in the day will be on Dateline tonight at 9pm EST. Her husband was murdered as the ending of a terrible love triangle. It's so sad. I am happy to report that she is doing well...she is happily remarried and her 5 kids are so beautiful. I can only hope they are getting the support they need through this tragic event in their lives.

    After all of the negative things in the news lately, I was please to see Yahoo! had this heartwarming video as one of their front page news stories. A baby's laugh is the sweetest sound.

    Wish I had seen this room reveal before I posted a tribute to pink and yellow rooms last week!

    Honeycomb Hexagon Wall @ Vintage Revivals-2

    Is this not the cutest idea for a birthday party? Of course it's cute - it's Emily Maynard's daughter. Gosh, it makes me want a girl. Everything makes me want a girl. I mean, c'mon, glamping? I might have one of those parties with some of my girlfriends. But at least the camping theme can be done with the boys...a cool birthday theme to consider!

    These warm weather entertaining tips by Caitlin at Glitter Guide are great!

    Have a fabulous weekend! I've got a garage sale to run...woot woot! xoxo

    Thursday Thoughts

    I've been thinking lately {look out!} about how I've just turned 30 and how I've heard from some people that they literally had to start working out harder the minute they turned because their body instantly became stubborn it seemed. I feel like lately I've been pretty darn good about working out...lots of barre classes, started doing Spin again, and then my strength training sessions. But for some reason...I feel like I'm staying the same. Maybe that's just me? I hope so. But regardless, I'm not seeing the number on the scale budge much - though I know muscle weighs more than fat. But I don't like that to ever be my excuse! I also feel like my postpartum belly seems to not be as hard as it once was...so not OK with that...maybe I'm just crazy, or bloated this week. But it has been bothering me a lot the last couple of days.

    Anyway, the belly thing got me thinking that I need to pump up the cardio {apparently Spin and elliptical are not enough?} and I realized I have done almost zero running this year. Sporadically at best. I'm not a "runner" per se, but usually by this time of year, I've got at least three 5Ks completed, and one 10K - the Cooper River Bridge Run. {But we all know I skipped out on that due to late night painting of the living room last month.} So how many have I done? Zero. Zilch. Nada. {Womp-Womp}

    http://www.womenshealthmag.com/files/wh6_uploads/images/0904-begin-running.jpg
    {source}

    I also had a goal last year of running my first half marathon and I still need to do that. Obviously I need to train for that. I have my heart set on the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon in October, so that gives me just under 6 months - plenty of time if I use it right. Normally most training schedules are 12-16 weeks for a half marathon, but I think I want to get a head start. And I need to start getting some 5Ks done to help keep my motivation going. I did a search on www.active.com and my first 5K this year might be a Mother's Day run.

    I also need to eat clean. I have been lax on that lately...I either eat too little or too much some days...I eat the wrong things even though I know better. As far as family dinners, I have tried hard to keep a menu going, getting most of my recipes from Skinny Taste, so at least there's that. But often times, our day gets hectic and my meal plans change last minute. I also need to get up earlier so I can make a good high-protein breakfast...and I need to pack a lunch and healthy snacks for days I go to the office. It's easier said than done, I know, but I've been good before - I can be good again.

    {source}

    And then there's Andee from The Honeybee blog...who is just so disciplined with her eating {and stunningly gorgeous as well} and she just recently posted her one year post-partum body on her blog...she looks AMAZING. Puts all those postpartum ladies with nothin' but excuses to shame. Hell, I work hard and she put ME to shame. Though, after I had Tanner, I will admit, I snapped back quickly {WARNING: Blast from the past below}:

    Post-Beach in May 2006 - 6 Months Postpartum

    But after Baby #2, it got hard...and things were somewhat displaced. These are more recent pics of me, the first from the Target dressing room in March and the other from my Roxy photoshoot in February.

    I know I don't look bad, but I look at it and think I could be better. I guess that's the way I am.
    I don't want to make excuses because I could always be working harder than I have. So I'm not going to make any...I'm just going to set my goals...set my mind to them...and get it done.

    To Be Continued!
